When the wind is blowing these ventilation channels allow air to move from the soffit vents to the ridge vents. They are known are also known as wind baffle insulation baffles rafter vents or venting chutes. The rigid foam is cut to be 2 inches wider than the space between rafters then 1 inch of foam is scored and folded over on either side of the foam creating standoffs that hold the foam away from the roof sheathing providing a space for air to flow. The dual function design creates ventilation channels under the roof sheathing for healthy air circulation while integral baffles prevent wind washing.

Site built baffles have several possible advantages over manufactured baffles. Roofs often require ventilation channels directly under the roof sheathing either for a short section of the roof for example near the eaves or for the entire roof from soffit to ridge.
